Words tumble over, clumping, clinging,
\nTo roasting pans, potato ricers, caught in the nap
\nOf soft carpet, leaving me
\nSpeechless. <\/p>\n
Dawn opens slowly, with fog-cooled ardor:
\nAt the hinge of the day, you have to push harder. <\/p>\n
Gathered around him, adjusting
\nstances, backpacks, ponytails,
\nthey listen past speech, to the buzz
\nof a soft-mingling evening. <\/p>\n
When rivers and hearts overflow, they leave us
\nWithout purchase on their muddy effusion.<\/p>\n
At night I sink into the yielding rot
\nOf memory and happenstance, to be reborn
\nFrom fragrant compost of a squandered day. <\/p>\n
The knife bisects, the juices spurt;
\nStill strong the victim lies!
\nTo make a stew, some must get hurt
\nBut only the killer cries. <\/p>\n
I cook a meal for tiny wings
\nThat farther than my feet will ever fly
\nAnd fathom not the breeze that brings
\nThem by. <\/p>\n
My eyes behold a glitt’ring brew
\nOf diamonds steeped in mud
\nThat makes the mouth of man run true
\nAnd his head fall with a thud. <\/p>\n
Grilled cheese and tomato soup sure beats a
\nSlice or two of microwaved cold pizza:
\nAnd yet in all but name,
\nThey’re much the same.
\n(It’s not condensed soup I’m anticipatin’ \u2014
\nThat stuff’s from Satan.)<\/p>\n
The cat has flexibility
\nFar beyond what’s willed to me.
\nI know it’s so, but how in heck
\nCan he lick his neck? <\/p>\n
The cat eats all that he can reach:
\nSome kale, a PBJ, a peach,
\nChicken fried steak, a hot cross bun \u2014
\nHe weighs a ton. <\/p>\n
Upon my troth the cat doth pee \u2014
\nAnd also on my chair, doth he.
\nWhy doth he this, my pretty lass?
